Real stories from real women about bone health

Women should be made aware that they have a choice!

Despite a healthy lifestyle, Sonia was diagnosed with osteoporosis a few years ago, leaving her frustrated and uncertain of her next best step. Then, a bad reaction to a bisphosphonate prescription drug solidified her resolve to address her bone health naturally, despite her doctor’s objections. Now, with diet, exercise and high-quality supplements, Sonia is healthy, confident, and living on her own terms.

“I have moderate scoliosis, and because I wanted to avoid the complication of osteoporosis, I started taking HRT many years ago. However, after hearing so many negative reports about artificial hormones, I decided I needed to stop taking it. Then, four years ago I was diagnosed with osteopenia and my doctor wanted to put me on Fosamax. I told her I didn’t like to take medicine and wanted to try on my own. Just a year later, however, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, and my doctor insisted I go on Fosamax. I was very upset because I eat healthy, never smoke or drink, and always exercise. But I was scared, so I reluctantly agreed to start Fosamax. I took just one pill and had terrifying results. The next morning I couldn’t get out of bed, and any movement caused my body to go into a terrible spasm. I didn’t know if I was having a heart attack and it was so bad, I went to the ER. Fortunately, nothing was seriously wrong with me. I was told it couldn’t possibly be the Fosamax, but I decided to search the internet for more information. When I found a consumer ratings site where several women with my same symptoms had posted concerns about the drug, I knew that that I had to take matters into my own hands.

“I began to research everything I could about osteoporosis. Looking on the internet, I stumbled onto Women to Women’s website. Everything I read made so much sense. In fact, I had never heard anyone discuss menopause before with such a positive attitude.

“As I continued my research, I realized that my reaction to Fosamax had been a blessing in disguise. I found out that Fosamax leaves out one of the body’s essential steps in building new bone — resorption. Who knows what this medication will do to women in 10 or 20 years? They could be left with a skeleton of old bones! I told my doctor I was going to take the Women to Women supplements, increase my exercise by working out at Curves three times a week, and change my diet to include yogurt and lots more vegetables every day. She was furious with me and said I wasn’t doing anything to help my osteoporosis. I said that I thought I was.

“After following this regimen for about two years I had another bone density test. The results were amazing. My hip improved 2.0% — no longer in the osteopenic range! And my spine improved 6.2% — from osteoporosis to osteopenia. (Because of the scoliosis, the curve and rotation of my spine confounds the test results, so I don’t have a lot of faith in the scores of my spine, anyway.) When my doctor called to tell me the results, I said, ‘I didn’t know you could reverse osteoporosis.’ She said that it was because of the Fosamax. When I told her that I wasn’t taking Fosamax, she wasn’t very receptive. I believe she just couldn’t admit that I did it without drugs. You would think she would be curious enough to ask me what I did, so that she could help other patients who don’t want to be on drugs, too!

“I know that I am healthier and that my bones are stronger due to the combination of my Women to Women supplements, exercising at Curves, and eating a healthier diet. I believe it was Divine Intervention that led me to the Women to Women website so many years after reading Dr. Northrup’s book. If I didn’t have this website and its articles, I’m telling you, I would have felt so alone, wondering ‘What do I do — am I making the right decision?’ Reading your articles on the natural approach to bone health gave me the confidence to deal with this on my own terms. It empowered me to take care of my own health. Doctors are always pushing drugs, but women should be made aware that they have a choice! I can’t thank you enough.”

"My bones started aching, and I felt like an old person!"

Rose was on hormone therapy when she was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Her doctor put her on Fosamax, then Actonel, both of which caused unpleasant side effects. Rose stopped taking hormones and began her own research into her health problems. She came across Dr. Brown’s book, Better Bones, Better Body, and then scheduled an appointment.
