Fatigue. Weight gain. Hot flashes. Low libido. Hair loss. According
to the thousands of women we work with, these are the “top five” menopause symptoms
that are most debilitating and motivate women to seek relief.
As one Facebook friend shared with us, “People should
NOT tough it out or chalk them up to ‘getting old.’ There is HELP :)”
So to help you get started, here are some quick tips for finding
the relief you need. Some common symptoms are more complicated and will likely respond
best to a comprehensive approach, such as our
Personal Program for Hormonal Imbalance.
-
Find relief from: Fatigue
What you tell us:
“Ever since I hit menopause I have experienced a lot of fatigue. The level varies
like a roller coaster, and sometimes I am so physically exhausted I can barely do
anything.”
Why fatigue happens:
Interrupted sleep patterns is one of the most common issues we see during perimenopause
and menopause. Hormonal balance is dependent on adequate rest and nourishment. And
your ability to rest and make healthy dietary choices directly affect your hormonal
balance.
Relief tip:
Take two minutes a day to simply breathe. Find a quiet
place where you can be alone and take time to notice your breathing — each inhale
and exhale — and reflect. When we set aside time to return to our center, to tune
in to our own needs, we can also begin to tap into an amazingly infinite source
of energy.
-
Find relief from: Weight Gain
What you tell us:
“I am so fed up with weight gain, depression, and fatigue. I don't even have the
energy to work out.”
Why it happens:
Shifting hormones can change how women store weight. When the body experiences ongoing
stress (as in menopause) it stores away calories as part of its “survival mode.”
The typical American diet doesn’t help.
Relief tip:
Cut back on refined carbohydrates. Try to eat more high-quality
protein, vegetables, healthy fats, and some fruit. By including lots of fiber and
good protein in your diet, you will help your body maintain stable blood sugar levels,
and you’ll be far less likely to store those extra carbohydrates as fat.
-
Find relief from: Hot Flashes
What you tell us:
“I started perimenopause at 36 — hot flashes that affected my scalp in particular;
I would have sweat rolling down my face and neck from my hair.”
Why hot flashes happen:
During a hot flash, your heat-regulation center in the brain receives a signal that
your body needs to dispel heat. Perceived stress can trigger a hot flash in a heartbeat.
Certain foods and drinks, such as sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and hot spices, can
also create a heat wave.
Relief tip:
Layer your clothing. For temporary relief, choose several
thin layers of clothing so you can start taking things off as soon as you feel the
warmth coming on. It sounds too simple, but it really can offer peace of mind to
plan your outfits ahead of time.
-
Find relief from: Low Libido
What you tell us:
“So fed up with not having any sex drive...”
Why low libido happens:
Physical changes, such as vaginal dryness, may make sexual activity uncomfortable.
It’s no wonder many women experience a drop-off in libido as a result!
Relief tip:
Know your options. Make sure you are eating a balanced
diet and getting enough omega-3 essential fatty acids to support healthy cell membranes.
If you don’t find relief, vitamin E suppositories help replenish thin vaginal tissue.
It’s important to know — you have more options than lubrication!
-
Find relief from: Hair Loss
What you tell us:
“Then I started losing my hair by the handfuls. That’s when I knew I must do something.”
Why hair loss happens:
Our hormones are intimately connected to our hair, and its growth and shedding cycle.
Sometimes an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone can cause thinning hair.
Many women only start to notice this during menopause or perimenopause.
Relief tip:
Vitamins and minerals are very important for healthy hair growth.
Be sure you’re getting vitamins B, C, D, and E, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc,
iron, and fish oil with essential fatty acids.
