Ask Emily — thyroid health
QUESTION:
At what age should I get my thyroid checked?
ANSWER:
We recommend having your thyroid checked starting at around age 30 to obtain a baseline
reading and, provided the results are normal and you’re having no symptoms, getting
checked every five years after that to follow up. If you have a family history of
thyroid conditions, however, you should get tested at age 20. And if you start to
experience symptoms at any age, schedule
thyroid testing as soon as possible.
Finding out about a thyroid disorder earlier rather than later is always preferable.
The less advanced the thyroid imbalance, the more likely you can learn about ways
to change your life that can help correct it and restore optimal function (and the
less likely you are to need prescription medication).
