Ask Emily — menopause

QUESTION:

What is perimenopause?

ANSWER:

Perimenopause is the time leading up to menopause in which you are experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalance (hot flashes, mood swings, feelings of depression, anxiety, irregular periods, fatigue, etc.). The ratio of the hormones estrogen and progesterone fluctuate during this time and result in symptoms. This transition generally lasts between two and five years before menopause, but some women can experience symptoms for 10-15 years before their periods stop.
