Ask Emily — menopause

QUESTION:

Can I delay menopause?

ANSWER:

Menopause is a natural process in women that cannot be delayed. It is officially defined as one year past your last menstrual period, when your body ceases ovulating. For years the medical community has explained that women gradually lose eggs as they age until menopause. However, there is new research stating that stem cells may be what determines the stopping of ovulation rather than the number of eggs. This information is still being explored. Either way, aside from lessening the chances of early menopause by caring for yourself nutritionally, hormonally and emotionally, we will most likely go through natural menopause around the time our mothers did.
