Ask Emily — hormone replacement therapy
QUESTION:
I’m afraid of hormone replacement therapy. What are my options?
ANSWER:
You’ll be pleased to hear that there are many gentler, effective alternatives to
synthetic HRT drugs like Premarin and Prempro (which have been linked to increased
risk of cancers, heart attack, stroke, blood clots, and dementia). Most women don’t
require hormone therapy to ameliorate their symptoms. As one writer put it, saying
hot flashes are the result of an estrogen deficiency is like saying a headache is
the result of an aspirin deficiency. We recommend all women follow a natural program
that supports hormonal balance, such as our Personal Program. For those who still
need hormonal supplementation, we find they generally get better results from bioidentical
hormones, for which the safety data are more promising.
