Ask Emily — bone health
QUESTION:
What is the difference between osteoporosis and osteopenia?
ANSWER:
Osteoporosis is diagnosed when your bone mineral density (BMD) is 2.5 points below the standard, which is defined by a large sample of 20 to 29-year-olds. Osteopenia is diagnosed when BMD is lower than standard, but not low enough to be considered osteoporosis. A diagnosis of osteopenia can put you in a higher risk category for developing osteoporosis.
