Ask Emily — bone health
QUESTION:
At what age should I get bone mineral density testing and a bone scan?
ANSWER:
Because all of our bodies are unique, the ideal situation would be to have your bone density tested between the ages of 25 and 30 for a baseline and then compare that number to the measurement 30 years later. This way you are measuring against yourself, not some “norm” set for a wide range of women. However, we realize many women were not able to have bone scans in their late twenties and thirties. The US Preventative Services Task Force suggests having a density test if you are 65-years-old or older or at age 60 if you are at increased risk for osteoporosis.
