Ask Emily — adrenal fatigue

QUESTION:

What is adrenal fatigue?

ANSWER:

Our adrenals keep us safe by providing a healthy “fight or flight” response to stressful situations. However, this response is only meant to last for a short period of time to get us out of danger. When stress becomes the norm in our lives, the adrenals are constantly turned on and can get burned out, leading to adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue can gradually tear down the body by producing sustained levels of cortisol and decreasing DHEA (precursor hormone to estrogen, progesterone and testosterone) production.
