Ask Emily — adrenal fatigue

QUESTION:

What are the adrenal glands responsible for in my body?

ANSWER:

Your adrenal glands are responsible for your body’s “fight or flight” response. They can be divided into two sections: the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla. The cortex is responsible for producing the hormones cortisol, DHEA, estrogen and testosterone. And the medulla is responsible for producing adrenaline. In order for your body to be in “fight or flight” mode, your adrenals increase your heart rate and blood pressure, slow down your digestion, release energy stores and sharpen your senses. This is a healthy response to stress.
