Ask Emily — adrenal fatigue

QUESTION:

What’s the difference between Adrenal Fatigue and just being tired?

ANSWER:

Adrenal fatigue occurs when we experience more sustained stress than we can handle. Common factors include lack of sleep, relationship conflicts at home or work, financial pressures, reliance on stimulants like caffeine and carbs, and even over-exercising, to name a few. Over time, these challenges take a toll on your body and the hormones that regulate your reaction to stress.

You can actually have your cortisol levels tested for adrenal fatigue. High cortisol levels and low DHEA production are signs of impaired adrenal function leading to adrenal fatigue. In advanced cases, your body may make very little cortisol as the adrenals have become exhausted. Fortunately, you can restore adrenal health through natural nutritional supplements, moderate exercise, and rest.
