Hormone replacement therapy
Should I start the Personal Program before weaning off HRT?
Q: I want to stop my HRT immediately and get on the Personal Program. Do
I need to be on the Program for a while first, or can I just started now?
A: While we strongly encourage women to begin the Personal Program two to
four months before beginning the HRT weaning process, this advice is based on principle,
not cast in stone.
The reasoning behind this is that having your system fully and naturally supported
in advance will act as a powerful shock-absorber for the hormone withdrawal symptoms
women so often experience when they stop prescription HRT.
By taking the time to shore up your health foundation at the nutritional and endocrinologic
levels, you are optimizing your chances of success. Researchers with the Women’s
Health Initiative found that as many as one in four women who try to stop HRT will
have such severe rebound symptoms that she will resume HRT as a result. We explain
this rebound effect at greater length in our article on
what to expect when you’re getting off HRT.
To moderate any withdrawal symptoms you may develop, we recommend you start the
Personal Program a few months before aggressively weaning off HRT. But you can most
certainly start the Personal Program at any time. It is never too soon or too late
to take better care of yourself. And if you can’t wait to get the ball rolling,
